This intensive masterclass is for choreographers, dancers and filmmakers who are passionate about the dance film genre. The program will explore the aesthetics of dance for the screen while also providing a practical collaborative experience for industry professionals. Participants will explore the evolution of dance film from the 20th century through to contemporary screendance practice using the works of internationally recognised leaders. This historical overview will be within the context of the three main sub genres of the art form. Participants will ‘play’ in the studio during shooting exercises with cameras, dancers and movement, exploring concepts of time, energy, space and gesture in staging and framing, to see what kind of impact they can generate. The masterclass will focus on editing as a form of choreography and the affective impact of sound in dance film, exploring montage ideas – including collision and flow, timing, pacing and trajectory phrasing. Suitable for choreographers, dancers and filmmakers at various stages in their careers from emerging (post graduates) to mid-career and established professionals. To ensure maximum access to state of the art AFTRS facilities and resources as well as in-depth immersion in a collaborative lab-type setting numbers are strictly limited. The masterclass is facilitated by Dr Richard James Allen (Choreographer/Director/Performer), co-director of the multi-award winning Physical TV Company, which specialises in stories told by the body. Physical TV has produced numerous highly acclaimed and widely screened shorts, a project for mobile phones and the short feature “Thursday's Fictions” (ABC-TV) which was recently reincarnated as a virtual world in Second Life with the support of AFTRS/LAMP.
